This routing template is designed to create the recess that accommodates the rear electronics cavity cover on Les Paul-style electric guitars.

It guides the router along the cover outline to produce a consistent recess suitable for flush mounting.

It is a useful accessory for luthiers, guitar makers and enthusiasts building their own instruments.

Made from 10 mm MDF

The template is made from 10 mm thick MDF, providing a guiding surface for a suitable bearing-guided router bit.

Its inner opening follows the asymmetric outline of an LP rear cover, with sloping sides and rounded corners.

Four center-alignment marks help position the template over the area to be routed.

How to use

1. Mark the position of the rear cover on the guitar body.

2. Position the template using the center-alignment marks.

3. Secure the template firmly using a suitable fixing method.

4. Set the routing depth according to the thickness of the cover to be fitted.

5. Route the recess using a pattern-following bit compatible with the template.

6. Check the cover fit before applying the finish.

For a 2 mm thick cover, adjust the recess depth to the actual cover thickness and the desired final finish.

Precautions

The result depends in particular on the bit diameter, the position of the guide bearing and the depth of each pass.

Test the setup on scrap wood before machining the final guitar body.
