Route an accurate recess for your rear switch cover

This routing template guides your router when cutting the circular recess for the rear toggle switch cover on a Les Paul-style electric guitar.

It is intended for luthiers, guitar makers and enthusiasts who want a neat, consistent recessed fit.

A simple, practical template

Made from 10 mm thick MDF, this template has a central circular opening measuring Ø54.5 mm.

Four centering marks arranged at 90° intervals help position it on the instrument.

Its thickness allows guidance with a suitable bearing-guided flush-trim router bit.

Standard Ø54.5 mm diameter

The standard version is designed to produce a Ø54.5 mm recess for a rear switch cover approximately Ø54 mm in diameter.

The difference in diameter provides a theoretical clearance of 0.25 mm on each side, making the cover easier to fit.

Warning: rear cover dimensions may vary between manufacturers. Check the actual diameter of your cover before machining.

Using the template with a router

The template is designed for use with a bearing-guided flush-trim bit whose bearing diameter matches the cutting diameter.

With this configuration, the routed outline reproduces the diameter of the template opening.

The bearing must run against the template wall throughout machining.

Set the recess depth according to the actual thickness of the rear cover being fitted.

2. Mark the center of the area to be routed.

3. Position the template using its centering axes.

4. Secure the template firmly without damaging the instrument.

5. Set the routing depth to match the cover thickness.

6. Route the recess gradually with a suitable bit.

7. Check the cover fit before finishing.

Tip: always test the setup on a scrap piece of wood before working on your instrument.
